Chlorella vulgaris is a single-celled freshwater microalgae that has been studied for over a century. It contains an extraordinary concentration of vitamins, peptides, amino acids, antioxidants, and the rare Chlorella Growth Factor (CGF) — a complex of nucleic acids and peptides found nowhere else in nature. We use it because it does what few ingredients can: feed, protect, and rebuild skin at the cellular level.
Chlorella carries the complete B vitamin complex, each playing a distinct role in skin health. B3 (niacin/niacinamide) is perhaps the most potent: it regulates melanin transfer, softens fine lines, and reinforces the skin barrier. B2 supports cellular energy turnover. B12 aids in skin repair and reduces inflammation. Together, they fuel the metabolism that keeps skin renewing itself.
Niacinamide effectively reduces the appearance of hyperpigmentation and age spots, leading to a more uniform skin tone, per research published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology. Separately, niacin has been shown to protect keratinocytes from UV-induced DNA damage by replenishing cellular ATP through NAD⁺ synthesis.

Chlorella's peptide profile is dense with proline, glycine, and lysine — the same amino acids that form the backbone of collagen. But the peptides don't just build; they protect. Research demonstrates that chlorella-derived peptides shield skin fibroblasts from UV-induced cell death, actively preventing DNA fragmentation at the cellular level.
In a published study, human skin fibroblasts treated with chlorella-derived peptide after UVC irradiation showed complete protection from cytotoxicity — while untreated cells in every control group experienced damage. CDP inhibited caspase-3 activity (the enzyme that triggers cell death) and prevented UV-induced DNA fragmentation.

CGF is a proprietary compound found exclusively in chlorella. It's a concentrated mix of nucleic acids (RNA/DNA fragments), peptides, amino acids, and polysaccharides that signal skin cells to regenerate. Research on human skin fibroblast lines confirms that CGF directly stimulates the expression of Type I and Type III collagen — the structural proteins responsible for firmness and elasticity.
Quantitative PCR analysis confirmed that CGF extracted from Chlorella vulgaris increased collagen I and III gene expression in human fibroblast cell line Hu02, indicating direct stimulation of collagen synthesis.

What it does for your skin
B3 regulates melanin transfer to reduce dark spots and uneven pigmentation over time.
Chlorella peptides and carotenoids neutralize free radicals and protect against UV-induced DNA damage.
CGF triggers fibroblasts to express more Type I & III collagen for firmer, more elastic skin.
Bentonite and kaolin clays draw out impurities and excess oil without stripping the barrier.
Colloidal oatmeal and chlorella's antioxidants reduce redness and oxidative stress markers.
CGF's nucleic acid complex signals accelerated cell turnover and supports skin regeneration.
Apply a generous, even layer to clean, dry skin — avoiding the eye area.
Allow to set for 10–15 minutes. As the clay dries, it draws impurities upward while the chlorella actives absorb.
Remove with a warm, damp cloth using gentle circular motions. Do not rinse while fully dry — re-dampen the mask first.
Follow immediately with your serum and moisturizer on freshly cleansed skin. Use 2–3× per week for best results.
